The Tom Hanks movie Cast Away was released on 22nd December 2000. The movie tells the story of a Fed-Ex employee who finds himself on an uninhabited Island in the South Pacific after his plane crashes, and his struggle to survive. The movie grossed over $400 million USD worldwide.

Shooting of the movie took place between 1998 & 2000 but it was not shot consecutively. Tom Hanks gained around 50 pounds pre-production and then after a majority of the film was shot, production was stopped for a year so that he could lose the weight and grow his hair and beard.

In the movie, Wilson the volleyball becomes Chuck Noland's (Tom Hanks) only companion during the 4 years he is on the deserted Island. It is said that one of the original volleyball props was sold at auction for $18,500 USD to the ex-CEO of Fed-Ex.
Why are well telling you this information? Cast Away was filmed on Monuriki (Modriki) Island which is approx 15 minutes boat ride from Matamanoa Island.
The Island of Monuriki has been a popular tourist attraction since the films release with most of the resorts in the Mamanuca Islands offering excursions for their in-house guests.

Deep Blue Diving & Watersports offer an excursion for Matamanoa house guests to Monuriki Island twice weekly, It is our most popular excursion. Our local guide will give you a tour of some of the set locations and share some stories with you regarding the film making. He will also show you how to husk a coconut (not the Tom Hanks way below!)

Your guide will also take you in search of the critically endangered Fiji Crested Iguana and will show you some of the unique flora and fauna.
Before heading back to Matamanoa there will be time for you to relax on the beach or snorkel on the beautiful reef.
